Gov. Sule offers his condolences following the deaths of two students in the rice stampede at Nasarawa University.

A rush that happened on Friday morning as the State government was getting ready to give palliatives to the students at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, NSUK, resulted in the confirmation of at least two deaths and the injuries of seventeen more.

It is thought that the victims were among those who were injured more than once at the University’s convocation field, where the event was scheduled to take place.

The distribution of rice and 5,000 naira to students in postsecondary educational institutions throughout the State was started by Governor Sule Abdullahi on Monday in an effort to lessen the impact of the nation’s severe hardship and skyrocketing inflation.

The distribution was carried out at the Federal University of Lafia, the State-owned Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and the College of Education.

Many of the victims had been carried to the hospital, according to Yunusa Baduku, National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, who spoke to a news outlet. “What transpired at Nasarawa State University this morning is incredibly pitiful and uncalled for. The students unexpectedly showed up at the location and overpowered the security after our plan to distribute palliatives to the students at the University’s Convocation Square. He was cited as saying, “They broke through the gate into the Convocation Square where the bags of rice were to be shared.”

The event at NSUK highlighted the challenges associated with distributing the goods to the recipients.

Sam Akala, a former chairman of the Karu Local Government Area, is cited as accusing the authorities of being responsible for the regrettable event. “No citizen’s life is worth the palliatives provided by the government. The government must see to it that those responsible for these heinous deeds are held accountable and subject to the full force of the law.

Governor Abdullahi Sule claimed that “suspected hoodlums and some misguided students[who] forced their way into the school’s convocation ground to cart away the rice kept at the venue meant for distribution as palliatives to students” were responsible for the incident in a press release signed by his press secretary, Ibrahim Adra.

However, the statement urged people to maintain their composure as the administration persisted in trying to lessen the suffering that students and other vulnerable groups were going through.
