Shops at Sokoto Central Market are destroyed by fire.

At the Sokoto State Central Market, more than 180 stalls were destroyed by a fire outbreak that broke out early on Monday.

About five in the morning on Monday, the fire broke out, razing a portion of the central market.

Someone who went to the scene, gave a report   that the motorbike sales location was specifically destroyed by the fire.

Investigation revealed that the fire originated at a garbage disposal site.

Unknown numbers of motorcycles and stores were damaged by the fire, according to Shehu Muhammad, the chairman of the Motorcycle Marketers Association.

“We are yet to ascertain and quantify the number of motorcycles burnt by the fire, as it is burning and raging.

“But many people lost their sides along with their motorcycles because they could not come in time as the fire started around 6 a.m. this morning,” he said.

“But the men of the federal and state fire service are currently battling, but I know it will take some time before they can quench it all,” he said.

He made a plea to the state administration to assist individuals who lost their belongings in the fire.

Recall that the market has a history of being associated with fire outbreaks; two more such episodes were documented in 2016 and 2021, during which time half of the market was destroyed and the remaining portion is still being rebuilt.
